Il MLAC – Museo Laboratorio di Arte Contemporanea della Sapienza Università di Roma è lieto di presentare From the Home to the Planet. A dialogue between Elena Cologni and Mother Art Collective, esposizione curata con Raffaella Perna.
La mostra nasce dal dialogo tra l’artista e ricercatriceElena Colognie le artiste delcollettivocaliforniano Mother Art Collective (MAC – Laura Silagi, Deborah Krall and Suzanne Siegel) e dalla comune attenzione nei confronti del concetto di cura, inteso come pratica estetica, sociale e politica. L’esposizione esplora i legami tra la cura vissuta nella dimensione domestica e la cura concepita come impegno pubblico ed ecologico: attraverso una selezione di opere realizzate dagli anni Settanta a oggi – installazioni, sculture, video, fotografie, materiali d’archivio e pratiche partecipative sviluppate ad hoc – la mostra interroga il rapporto tra esperienza personale, maternità, relazioni affettive e azione collettiva, vedendo nellacura un’attività relazionale e un’azione trasformativa.
Mother Art Collective nasce a Los Angeles nei primi anni Settanta all’interno del contesto femminista del Woman’s Building e del Feminist Studio Workshop. Con progetti militanti come Rainbow Playground (1973) e Laundryworks (1976), il collettivo pratica sin dall’esordio un’arte partecipativa, portando nei luoghi quotidiani (lavanderie, parchi giochi, spazi urbani) riflessioni sull’invisibilità delle madri artiste e sul lavoro di cura come atto politico. Sfidando la dicotomia tra sfera pubblica e privata, il lavoro di Mother Art Collective nella collaborazione con Cologni si è allargato alla dimensione ambientale: “abbiamo iniziato a prenderci cura dei nostri figli e ci siamo evolute nel prenderci cura del pianeta”. L’opera che dà il titolo alla mostraFrom the Home to the Planet. Trajectories of migrations – pensata da Mother Art Collective e Cologni appositamente per gli spazi del museo – indaga le traiettorie di migrazione umana e vegetale nella crisi climatica, evidenziando come la cura, privata e condivisa, possa essere interpretata anche come una forma estetica di cura del pianeta.
Nelle azioni di Mother Art Collective, Elena Cologni ha riconosciuto una pratica anticipatrice dell’estetica della cura e, sentendosi affine alle idee e allo spirito delle artiste del collettivo, ha avviato con loro uno scambio continuativo, che si protrae dal 2021.
Artista italiana attiva nel Regno Unito e Professoressa Associata presso la Cambridge School of Art (ARU), Cologni fonda la sua pratica artistica su metodi dialogici e situati. Coniando il concetto di “intraplace” – uno spazio relazionale tra artista e partecipante – incorporato nei progetti Seeds of Attachment (2016/) e The body of/at Work (2021/), Cologni adotta un linguaggio artistico dialogico basato sulla “cura con” (caring-with), che prevede azioni reciproche e responsabilità condivise, ispirate al pensiero di Joan Tronto, Carol Gilligan e Virginia Held.
Il progetto espositivo si sviluppa nell’ambito della ricerca Towards a Feminist Care Aesthetics, per il quale Cologni è stata premiata dal Getty Research Institute (2023), e dal Quality Research and Innovation Fund, Faculty of Arts Humanities Education and Social Sciences, Anglia Ruskin University (ARU, 2024). Il progetto si basa sull’analisi degli archivi di Mother Art Collective al Getty, sullo studio della loro vicenda artistica, con un approccio di lavoro artistico e teorico condiviso, condotto tra Europa e Stati Uniti.
Il 21 ottobre 2025 si terrà un pomeriggio di studi dedicato ai temi della mostra, con la partecipazione di Mother Art Collective ed Elena Cologni.

The MLAC – Museo Laboratorio di Arte Contemporanea of the Sapienza University of Rome – is pleased to present From the Home to the Planet. A Dialogue between Elena Cologni and Mother Art Collective, an exhibition curated with Raffaella Perna.
The exhibition arises from a dialogue between artist and researcher Elena Cologni and the artists of the California-based collective Mother Art Collective (MAC – Laura Silagi, Deborah Krall, and Suzanne Siegel) and from their shared focus on the concept of care, understood as an aesthetic, social, and political practice. The exhibition explores the connections between care experienced in the domestic sphere and care conceived as a public and ecological commitment. Through a selection of works from the 1970s to the present — installations, sculptures, videos, photographs, archival materials, and participatory practices developed specifically for this occasion —the exhibition questions the relationship between personal experience, motherhood, emotional relationships, and collective action, viewing care as a relational activity and a transformative action.
Mother Art Collective was founded in Los Angeles in the early 1970s within the feminist context of the Woman’s Building and the Feminist Studio Workshop. With militant projects such as The Rainbow Playground (1973) and Laundryworks (1976), the collective practiced participatory art from the outset, bringing reflections on the invisibility of mother artists and on care work as a political act into everyday spaces (laundries, playgrounds, urban spaces). Challenging the dichotomy between the public and private spheres, Mother Art Collective’s work through this collaboration with Cologni expanded to the environmental dimension: “we began by caring for our children and evolved into caring for the planet.” The work that gives its title to the exhibition, From the Home to the Planet. Trajectories of Migrations – conceived by Mother Art Collective and Cologni specifically for the museum spaces – investigates the trajectories of human and plant migration in the climate crisis, highlighting how care, both private and shared, can also be interpreted as an aesthetic form of caring for the planet.
Elena Cologni recognized Mother Art Collective’s work as a precursor to the aesthetics of care, and feeling a connection to the collective’s ideas and spirit, she initiated an ongoing exchange with them, which has continued since 2021.
An Italian artist active in the United Kingdom and Associate Professor at the Cambridge School of Art (ARU), Cologni bases her artistic practice on dialogical and situated methods. Coining the concept of “intraplace”—a relational space between artist and participant—embodied in the projects Seeds of Attachment (2016) and The Body of/at Work (2021), Cologni adopts a dialogical artistic language based on “caring-with”, which involves reciprocal actions and shared responsibilities, inspired by the thought of Joan Tronto, Carol Gilligan, and Virginia Held.
The exhibition project is part of the research Towards a Feminist Care Aesthetics, for which Cologni was awarded a Getty Research Institute grant (2023), and a Quality Research and Innovation Fund grant, Faculty of Arts Humanities Education and Social Sciences, Anglia Ruskin University (ARU, 2024). The research is based on the analysis of the Mother Art Collective archives, on the study of their artistic history and on shared artistic and theoretical work, conducted between Europe and the United States.
On October 21, 2025, a study afternoon dedicated to the exhibition’s themes will be held, with the participation of Mother Art Collective and Elena Cologni.
